Opened letter to public by five journalists

Leter No1

Dear...

Davor Butković

These days several newspapers (Vecernji list, Novi list, Vjesnik, Globus, Feral Tribune, Jutarnji list) published the information that recently replaced chief of civil secret service POA, Franjo Turek, on his way  down from his function, last week he presented in Government and in President's office, the unfriendly actions of five famous Croatian journalists, accusing them for spreading false information, that the general Ante Gotovina, who is accused by Tribunal, Court in Haag, as a suspect and the Interpol is looking for him, is in Croatia. On that list are (supposing) these journalists: Davor Butkovic (Jutarnji list), Gordan Malic (Globus), Boris Pavelic (Novi list), Ivica Djikic (Feral Tribune) and Zeljko Peratovic (Vjesnik).

Marijan Mlinarić

This information goes along with one part of interview of minister of police service, Marijan Mlinaric, who said that medias placed false information about Gotovina being in Croatia.

Politician of opposition, Sime Lucin (SDP), asked from parliamentary committee for national security, to open a discussion about: are the foreign secret services spreading false information about Croatian or did croatian secret services illegally spy on journalists. Seems like Franjo Turek presented to the leading Croatian authorities records affectedly recorded conversations of mentioned journalists and photographs of their meetings with different persons.

Gordan Malić

President of parliamentary committee, Ivan Jarnjak (HDZ), said that these information are secret and that he still can't open a discussion about that.

Boris Pavelić

We, the above mentioned journalists, have sent this in written, to the Council for civil  surveillance of secret services, which works under Parliament, asking for official investigation and declaration of the Government and the President's office, because we think that secret services illegally were spying on us and listening to us, and that information are still in possession of the Government, and the Government can continue to manipulate, although Mr. Franjo Turek resigned.

My colleagues asked from me to give this information to your association, so that we, in our protection of journalist laws, get also the international support.

Best regards

Dear...

Croatian president, Mr. Stjepan Mesic, declared in the last issue of «Feral Tribune», number 967, that information, that are still not official, are true, that ex-chief of POA-a (Croatian civilian secret service), Franjo Turek, had a presentation in President’s office, on which he said that six journalists, ex-chief of police department, Ranko Ostojic and some English diplomats, gave wrong information to the croatian public that Ante Gotovina is in Croatian.

President Mesic has in the interview to journalist of «Feral Tribune», Ivica Djikic, told that Turek was trying to explain that Croatian journalists cooperated with English diplomats, and he showed the photos of meeting Ranko Ostojic and English, than photos of meeting of Ostojic with  journalists, and after that columns in newspapers, in which behaviour of Croatian authorities is criticised in the case Gotovina.

President Mesic said that after presentation, he CASTIGATE Turek, and said that, with that act, Turek probably wanted to get closer to HDZ, so they would still leave him on the head of POA.

Ivica Đikić

It is interesting that president Mesic has claimed that he believed to the secret services everything what they said about case Gotovina, and related for case of spying journalists of the side of POA, recently he declared that some medias gave wrong information about Gotovina being in Croatia.

Today’s statement of president Mesic in «Feral Tribune», in which he stays besides the actions of Franjo Turek, is the first admittance that we the journalists are spied by POA.

Ranko Ostojić

It is an serious situation for us because, also the chief of right oppositional party Anto Djapic, in his interview for «Vecernji list», said that we the journalists, worked for foreign secret services to made Croatian relationship with Haag Court difficult. Djapic wanted to clear up all that story till the end, and said that us, the journalists, «were doing some jobs that were not in Croatian interests».

So, once more, we ask from your organisation to contact premier Sanader, who doesn't want to give a public answer is Franjo Turek organised in the Government the same presentation about our so-called cooperation with British secret services.

Premier Sanader should say did we work for secret services or Mr. Franjo Turek made false accusations. If not so, the torture towards us journalists will continue from political circles, who are against cooperation with Haag and going the runaway general Gotovina in Haag.

Best regards
